Innovation Project Pin-Up Ready!

The walls are ready on the 2nd floor for you to pin-up your work.  Just a few things:

1.  Please DO NOT remove the labels that I have pin’d up.  The jury will be using this label to coordinate a number with your group’s project.
2. Don’t forget to leave a comment for 3 teams that are not yours.  Please use the rubric that I have pin’d up up to give the groups constructive feedback.  You can leave the comment in the envelope that is pin’d up next to each group.  You can leave these comments anonymous if you would like.  Please leave comments individually.
3. Once you have left a comment in 3 envelopes I would also like you to fill out an online version so that I can track who has left a comment and track the results.  I would like you put your name on the online version, but I will not include your name when I give the feedback to each group.  The online survey will ask you to vote for your top 3 projects, so please make sure that you take the time to look through all the projects. 4. I have laid out the walls so that 2 groups pin-up on each side.  I have formatted it so that each group will pin up horizontally across, but if your group and the other group pin’d up on that wall would like to coordinate a different layout that is ok too.  The only thing I ask is that you don’t move to another wall.  I have given each group a number and strategically laid out the order, so PLEASE DO NOT REORDER the groups.
5. Finally, please send me a digital version of your presentation.  Please send this a pdf (NO indesign files please!!) Please send this by midnight on Friday.

The class, working in small groups, has collectively created a rich resource: a blog populated and tagged with multiple examples of “design “ and “design process”. Now is your chance to mine this rich compost of ideas and possibilities.

Surf this blog. Find three cases that you find intriguing because of the negotiations, and tensions, they present.

Leave a comment for each case directly on the blogpost. Start or contribute to a conversation. Leave a record. (50 to 100 words).

NOTE: We want each student to comment as an individual through their RAND group account. The individual should log in through their group account to leave a comment. Within the body of the comment the individual should leave their name (preferably just their first name) as a signature. This so that we (the graders) can identify each individual’s contribution.

Then reflect on what these cases — the three selected by you and the one worked on by your group — suggest for how design is, or could be, carried out.

Speculate on how these cases could inform “design” and the “design process”:

  • What could designers, and design practice, learn from these cases and their negotiations?
  • What sorts of challenges and opportunities do these cases raise for the way design is normally understood, taught, and practiced?
  • How could some of these lessons have influenced your Innovations Project?

LENGTH OF ESSAY: 750-1000 words MINIMUM. We are looking for essays that are carefully thought through, well-written, and clear.

This assignment should be completed individually. You may complete this assignment anytime before Dec 16th at 5pm.

Individually, submit the url’s for the blog entry which you commented on, as well as the essay via the T-square site.

Reminders and Suggestions:

1. Final Deliverable: 10 11×17 poster presentation is due Dec 3rd, should be pin’d up by noon, you will have from 9-12am on Friday to pin-up.  There will be three teams pin’d up on each side of a pin-up wall, and there will be a label where your team should pin-up their work.

  • All Teams will pin-up on the 2nd Floor
  • Send Digital copy of Presentation to Shabi as well

2. There will be a jury that will review and judge your work, this jury will include members from the Business School, Industrial Design School, and College of Architecture.  The jury will be looking for an innovative concept with a well-defined business case.
3. There will be three awards: First, Second & Third

There will also be comment sheets and comment envelopes for each team, as part of this project, you must constructively comment on at least 3 projects that are not yours.  The presentations will be pin’d up all weekend, so you will have from Friday to Sunday evening to leave a comment in 3 envelopes.  Also comment through digital survey.

It is extremely important to spend time this week defining the innovative concept, building the business case and clearly communicating your solution.  Use your indesign and photoshop skills, as well as other communication skill you learned this semester, to create a poster presentation that effectively communicates your teams solution.  Keep your posters highly visual and minimize the amount of text used, try and use no more than 1000 words throughout all 10 posters. Look at the four one-design fixes that are hanging on the gray wall as examples.

Also, please continuously check the Q&A section of the rand blog as this is where you should post any questions you have about the project and where I will post clarifications and responses to your questions.

Innovation Project Help

I see that some of you are struggling with your topic areas, here are just a few pointers:

When you are analyzing and brainstorming around your topic areas you need to think about starting with a broad topic, doing broad research through a field activity, gaining insights and learning more about problems and potential opportunities, then narrowing the topic, and then focusing and doing more research if necessary, then narrowing again.  This is a process of moving from a broad view to a narrow focus.

For example, if you start with on-campus recycling as your topic then as you conduct your broad research and your field activity, which could be, for example, recording your weekly activities and recording the amount of trash used and your waste methods.  Through this research you will identify several problems and potential opportunity areas like:

  • unclear signage on recycling bins
  • some items don’t have recycling trash cans like electronics
  • many people put trash in the recycling receptacles
  • not enough students care to walk to recycling bins and instead throw things away in the bin that is most convenient
  • certain locations like dorms don’t have easy and accessible recycling bins
  • the facilities staff don’t have an easy way of transporting the recyclables and keeping them separate
  • too much waste is recycled rather than reused or re-purposed (when certain materials like plastic get recycled they go through a very resource intensive process and it is not 100% recyclable, so if we could re-use before we recycle we could use resources more effectively)
  • a majority of the recyclable come from plastic bottles

Once you identify the issues and potential opportunities from your research, your team can then focus and narrow.  For example, maybe you focus on changing consumer behavior in college students to help make college students be more conscious about recycling.  From this narrow focus your team can do some more research and brainstorming ideas to satisfy this problem.  From there your team will narrow again until your team lands on the final solution.

Elevator Pitch Help

For the elevator pitch, I expect most teams are taking a first stab at this, and that this elevator pitch will most likely change as the project continues and as the team identifies a narrowed focus and a solution that they are most interested in.  Please don’t get attached to the solution you use for this first elevator pitch but continue researching and brainstorming ideas.  I expect that at the end of this project the teams will go through 100s of ideas, much like you saw in the IDEO video.  Don’t fall in love with one idea yet.  Also please remember that the innovation does not necessarily need to be a product, it can be a product innovation, a service innovation, a system, a process innovation…ect.  Please take a look at the slides presented on “What is Innovation”  try and extend your brainstorming beyond just a product.  If you look at the ipod it is so successful because it was a product innovation (ipod) with a service innovation (iTunes) and a retail innovation (Apple store with the Genius Bar)…all of these come together to create a well defined system.

To complete this exercise your team will need to have a strong understanding of the direction of your project and the potential concept.  Thus, it is important that your team has already conducted a field activity, conducted additional research, synthesized research, idea generation & selection.  It is OK if your concept changes or develops further after this exercise.  But it is important that you have an initial direction.

Innovation Project Topic Areas

Those of you who have already posted, thank you.  But as a class let’s rethink the topic areas.  If you have already posted please read my comment and try and refine your post.  Please make sure that you start with a larger global issue.

Examples of Global Issues:  Poverty, Hunger, Water, Lack of Resources, Sustainability, Education, Energy, Health, Disease, Political Unrest, Economy

Then narrow your focus, to a topic that you can analyze and physically experience yourself.

Examples of Narrowed Topics from larger issues:

  • Sustainability — Public Transportation Issues & Marta
  • Health & US Obesity – Eating Healthy on College Campuses
  • Sustainability — Eco Transportation Options – Bike Riding as a form of Transportation in Atlanta
  • Sustainability — Eco Transportation Options – Carpooling in Atlanta
  • Public Health care – Grady Health Clinic
  • Unemployment Issues – Connecting People with Employers
  • Reducing Waste – Explore how Georgia Tech deals with Waste
  • Energy Options – Georgia Tech Energy Use

Do NOT focus your topic area around a specific product, but focus your topic around an activity.  Narrowing your focus to a product will simply lead to a product innovation.  In this exercise your final solution does not need to be a product, it can be a service innovation, a business model innovation, a process innovation, OR a product innovation.  It can also be an offering that combines more than one type of innovation.

Documentation & Analysis Overview:

This assignment has two parts.  Begin part 1 through Nov 11-17th and work on part 2  Nov 18-24th. Both are due Nov 24th at midnight. The material you research, collect, and post for part 1 in general relates directly to the case selected.  The material collected and researched for part 2 relates to the negotiations and taxonomies identified.

Part 1 Documentation:  What is the information necessary for someone else to get a full picture of the case your group has selected to work on?  Over the next week, assemble this material and post to your blog. Review the material with your group and ask yourselves:  What else is needed?  Do we need information about is organization, its procedures, the people involved, the situation(s) within which it takes place, etc.  organize this material as clearly as possible on your blog.  Once you have done this, seek out your peers and TA’s and ask them to review it and give you feedback.  Add additional information, revise format, write explanatory text, and include imagery as necessary.

Part 2. Analysis:  What information is necessary to begin to understand/analyze the “negotiations” and “taxonomies” identified so far?  The research for this part will wander farther afield from the case since you are exploring “notions”, constructs, and “ideas”.  We will workshop this in class next Wednesday, November  17, you should have started Part 1 by this point and have at least some outline live on a “work in progress” blog entry.

The Documentation & Analysis blog entry should contain:

  • Evidence of reassessment & justification of both your taxonomies and negotiations.
  • Narrow your focus to 2 negotiations.
  • Explanatory text.
  • Sufficient supporting imagery.
  • References.

Blog Entry Design Requrements

  • When posting a blog entry do not attach a category other then what has been assigned. For example: never post under the category “Announcements”.
  • When posting a blog entry do attach your “Group Name” & “Assignment #” as a categories.
  • The title of your blog entry should be the title of your blog entry. This title should be a descriptive headline summarizing the content of your blog entry.
  • The internet is dynamic. Save all supporting resources (.jpeg’s, videos, etc) to your hard disc.
  • Unless you are familiar with HTML please use the visual editor when making a post.
  • Don’t embed images. When making a post always save imagery to your local hard disk.  Then upload via “Upload/Insert” within a post.

Test Post!

Hello World!

I am using this test post to show you a recent project that my girlfriend and I have been working on. It is for a design competition for the MODA, where we were asked to to create a 9×20 foot donor wall.  A few nights of painstaking work lead to an interactive wall that uses computer vision to detect someone walking by it and provokes the user to discover typographic objects hidden within it. We used Processing to code it up.

I made a computer recognize a person walking by and pixelate them using their actual real world colors.

Above is actually what the computer sees superimposed on top of what the user sees. We then made text pop up on the screen to interact with the user.

Of course this is just a test image from the design document, but we did get the thing working. Just thought I’d share my first attempt at interactive art.

Our goal of working with a blog is to as a class leave a digital artifact of our collective explorations into framing design, doing research, & negotiating with the outside world.

Blog  Setup

On your own form groups of 3-4 within your studio time slot. Organize with your group members & come up with a group name.

Email: & with your group name & group members ASAP. Put [COA1060 : RAND] in the subject line of this email.

Register a new username (must be your group name) with a shared password for your group at the following URL (located at the login link at the bottom of every page):

After registering please update your username’s (group’s) biographical information to include your group members.
Collaborate with your group to make your 1st blog entry.

Research & Selection Phase

Your 1st blog entry is intended to illustrate the research you have done thus far when identifying a case study.

The examples you chose must be something you think falls outside of your preconceived notions of what design is.

The post must include:

  • At least 2 potential case studies. Explain why chose each example.
  • Relevant background information including: Imagery, Video, & Links.
  • Preliminary notes & rationale for choosing your examples.
  • Construct several taxonomic categories for which your examples may fall in. When making a post attach these taxonomies in the “Tags (Simple Tags)” section.
  • Identify various “Negotiations” within your example.

Be prepared to present this material.

All blog entries are required to adhere to the basic design requirements of the RAND site. Review these requirements before completing your post.


By Wednesday Nov 10 at 8am, submit Via T-Square a URL to your live blog entry along with a word document or pdf containing all the material within the blog entry.


This assignment counts as 20% of your overall grade for this final project.

Keep in mind one thing you will be graded on how interesting and unique your examples are. How outside the frame you reached for your examples.
