Construction Material Sustainability and Innovations

Notes and Rationale: We would like to research the materials that have been used over the years only to be recalled due to either health concerns, availability, or ecological impact. The construction industry is moving towards greener engineering which includes reduction of waste by using recyclable resources with extended lifespans. Our hope is to discover what the up and coming materials are and how they will change the construction industry’s perspective on material cost and waste. Furthermore, this research can potentially help us illuminate the aspect of responsible design. In other words, design and development must consider what impact the final product will have and not just whether it is cheap and pretty or how much profit can be made. Does the design create more harm than good? Is it in fact destruction rather than innovation?

Ultimately, a GC may use a certain material because it is cheap, but if said material will need to be replaced due to fore mentioned issues then doesn’t the cost in fact go up. So, maybe a contractor spends more money on the front end but there is a long term savings available. Furthermore, the structure’s quality is improved which could bring repeat customers/ clients as well as a solid name in the industry.

Taxonometric Categories: Responsible Design, Socially Conscious, Environmentally Sustainable, Safe Standardization, Oversight Aware, Legally Abiding Design

Negotiations: Safe vs. Fiscally Desirable/ Aesthetics vs. Footprint/ Responsible vs. Profit/ Material Availability vs. Innovation/ Health vs. HomelessnessOrganized Oversight vs. Public Safety/ Money vs. Time vs. Money vs. Time vs.  Money/ General Contractors vs. Constraints/ Liability vs. Character/

Why are we re-inventing the wheel? Here are a few examples of projects that are entirely off of the grid and incorporate sustainable materials and construction.

I think this an extremely interesting project, but the way you have it framed right now it is framed as a research project not an innovation project. So lets work to re-frame it as an innovation project. Instead of researching and communicating the long-term benefits of a eco-material, how can you re-frame this topic around a problem focus? I also don’t think that this project allows for a field activity where you could physically experience and observe an activity. Could you think about re-framing the topic around environmentally conscious construction. And instead observe a construction process and observe the construction methods and try and discover solutions that are more environmentally friendly but at the same time meet the goals of the GC. This could allow you to find more reasons why eco-friendly materials are not being used and what are some other ways besides material that the construction industry could become more environmentally conscious.

Please try and re-frame the topic based on my suggestions, and post a comment addressing your changes.

Will do, I will think about how to frame it as such. As far as our ability to do field research, I believe I may be able to arrange a walk through in the current campus construction projects.

I think that sounds great! I would start planning the field research as soon as possible.

I have created a category for this group: Sustainable Construction, please use this category label for every post you upload for this project.

I agree good choice of topic. Shabi is right. I read this and thought it was an excellent submission for the Research and Framing project. Then came to find it was for Innovation project. I approved your other topic but if your want to resubmit something along the line of this for Research and Framing I encourage it.

I am glad the hear that it has worked out so that this is now a Research and Framing project. Please move forward under this topic for the Research and Framing assignments. Also now that you have made this switch when doing assignment 1 please be sure to also update this post to cover assignment 0’s deliverables. Also I would focus it to primarily cover the the Katrina trailer failure. Good job on this topic.

Do you mean that we should repost on tsquare in terms of the deliverables?

This project is a great example of sustainable design. One of the videos features a quote along the lines of “as architects, we have the responsibility to this planet to design sustainable structures.” Along those same lines and on a more general level, as designers, we have the responsibly to design new methods for sustainability. The real shock of this project is the fact that such a good idea was never implemented before. It meets all the requirements for successful sustainable design: using a common, mostly useless, and environmentally-friendly byproduct to improve something else.
