We will be looking at different approaches to laying out shopping centers in Urban areas. Our global issue is the ability to meet consumer needs with limited space.

I think this could be interesting, but lets refine the topic. Looking at lay out of shopping centers already leads you to a solution area. Lets begin at a problem-focused topic rather than a solution-focused topic area. So what is the problem that you are looking at? Is it about lack of shopping centers in urban areas, or difficulty for people to get to and from shopping centers? I am also not sure about the global issue that you are trying to address? Perhaps you could tell me what your team is interested in studying and then maybe we can work together to propose a topic area that will lead to an interesting project.

We decided to focus on higher efficiency in terms of mall directories. Perhaps we either propose a better method of providing directories to shoppers or a new type of directory altogether. This could also be a global issue because we could apply the system to all manners of industries like subways and buses, etc.

What do you mean by higher efficiency? What is the problem that your team is trying to address?

By higher efficiency, we mean that when you go to the mall or any shopping center it is difficult to find mall directories, and usually when you do you’ve walked halfway across the mall in the wrong direction, so we want to create or design something that will help to solve this issue for shoppers

I’m not sure I understand the global issue that this topic is addressing? Think about environmental, economic, political or social issues that your team can address through their topic.

We are very confused about what type of issues we are supposed to be focusing on. We thought that the mall directory issue was a social issue so thats why were going to focus on that. Does the issue just need to be on a larger scale than that? We would like to continue with a topic centered around shopping centers in general, however, if you think that we should completely refocus our research we can. Also, what should we focus on for the elevator pitch due tonight? We have started research on the directory idea, but if we aren’t going to go in that direction then what should we focus on?

We have decided to change our focus from the directory idea to grocery shopping. We would like to concentrate on global issue of wasted food in grocery stores. We feel that this is an environmental issue, as well as an economic (because of the money wasted) and social issue(meaning we must change people’s thinking/ awareness of the wastefulness in food markets.)

We will do our field research at the East and Westside Markets located on Tech’s campus. We would like to concentrate on what foods students are actually buying from these markets, and which ones are being wasted. We would also like to address the hours of operation of these stores, and its contribution to the wastefulness of these markets.

I think that sounds great! If your team would like to continue looking at the mall that would be fine as well, but you do want to find a larger global issue that the project is based on. However, I think the grocery idea is a very interesting idea. But how do you plan on researching this? Do you know people who work at the grocery store that will help you research this topic?

As for the elevator pitch, just take a stab at it, but I understand that it will greatly change once you do more research.

Okay we have several friends who work at different grocery stores that are willing to help in research, and we have spoken to the manager of the west side market and he was willing to let us look around and take pictures to find data. We are also planning on polling students to find out what they would like and would actually buy most in the stores and what hours they would prefer to shop for. We are also considering bringing homelessness into our idea, by using the wasted food for homeless shelters. Does this sound like it is on the right track?

yes, as long as you think that you will be able to effectively research then I think this is a great idea. I will make a category label for this group: Grocery Waste

Please use this category label every time your team uploads a post.
