SLUG: FO/GERMANY DATE: Downloaded email 11/29/2007 (EEL) CREDIT: Craig Whitlock/TWP LOCATION: Bohmte, Germany CAPTION: The town of Bohmte, pop. 8,000, has taken radical action to combat traffic problems along its main street. Since September 2007, it has been tearing out stop signs, traffic lights and sidewalks as part of an effort to force drivers and pedestrians to share the pavement. Known as Shared Space, the program has been adopted by several small towns across Europe and is drawing global attention.
